The two valleys on which lies the town are separated by the steep costs of Sample. The valley of the Rio Maggiore is topped by Mount Verugola whose three peaks, depicted in the coat of arms, have always represented the symbol of the village.
Manarola was created by the displacement of populations from the Val di Vara moved towards the sea to exploit its resources.

Situated on a promontory high above the sea, the village is the gorge that runs to the sea, enclosed between two rocky outcrops, hosting a small landing.
To the west there are three other villages of Manarola Cinque Terre, which is Monterosso, Corniglia, Vernazza, while to the east is only Riomaggiore. Among the five boroughs after Corniglia is the smallest.
Proceeding from west to east, after Monterosso there is Vernazza. The village lies on a small promontory jutting into the sea.
It is believed that the name derives from the Latin "verna" meaning "the place", "native", but it is also plausible that it may be linked to the most famous local product: the wine called Vernaccia.
Its marina provides a safe harbor, since the time of the Maritime Republics in a natural inlet that allows the docking of transport vessels and makes it even more distinctive and striking what is considered one of the most beautiful towns in Italy.
Corniglia is centrally located with respect to the other villages of the Cinque Terre, located east of the capital city of Vernazza and Monterosso, and west of Manarola and Riomaggiore.
It differs from the other villages of the Cinque Terre as it is the only village that overlooks the sea, but sits on top of a ridge about a hundred meters high, surrounded by terraced vineyards situated on the characteristic bands, except on the side look toward the sea.
To reach Corniglia is necessary to climb a long staircase. Corniglia and Vernazza are also coupled by an attractive promenade halfway between the summit and the sea.
Monterosso is the most populous and the westernmost of the Cinque Terre. Its geographical position makes it more strategic village of Five: Monterosso fact lies at the foot of the ridge on which converge the three-way main road of the district.
Monterosso is located at the center of a small natural bay, protected by a small artificial reef. To the west of the country, beyond the Colle dei Cappuccini, lies the village of Fegina, natural expansion of the tourist resort and small original village, where there is the railway station and where there are beaches of fine gravel. Compared with other fishing villages that make up the Cinque Terre, Monterosso beaches are relatively larger.
